This book left me really conflicted. If this book had been written 10 plus years ago I would be advocating it for all parents. My problem is that there is advice in this book that goes against current AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines. Just one example is pulling back the foreskin to clean an uncircumcised infant. This was best practice in the past, but we’ve now learned that it isn’t best and it’s recommended you NEVER pull pack the foreskin. There were multiple instances where her information was right at one point, but doesn’t meet current guidelines. On the other hand there is AMAZING advice on dealing with the emotions a new baby brings.My advice is too go ahead and read the book, but to double check anything related to the health and safety of your infant before proceeding. Take her own advice from her section “Dealing with Advice†and comb through this book taking the good parts(because there are some great ones) and just forget the rest (because there also parts that need to be).
I hate to write a negative review because I like Nanny Connie and was looking forward to this book, but it left me disappointed. It is a short easy read, I read it in a day.There is some decent tips in here but none of the good advice is anything you haven’t already heard. For example, start a night time routine early, pacifiers calm baby, gas drops reduce tummy issues. All very obvious tips. I felt there was way too many stories in here about celebrities. I don’t care about them.There was also a section on choosing a nanny. I think most people buying this book are doing so because they can’t afford a nanny, so that information was useless.Some statements in the book bothered me, like “formula is more nutritious than breast milk so..†. Actually, no it isn’t. Formula is fine if you need to use it, I’m not shaming anyone, but this is a false statement to make in a book. I found information on breastfeeding lacking in general. I bought the kindle version which does not have the AR ability of the hard copy. Lastly, this book is completely her on personal ideas and no research or citations are given just so you know.Overall, it’s not terrible or advertly dangerous recommendations but the book is ok at best, but not worth the money or read. I’d recommend just going to the library or reading information available online over purchasing this book.
I read this book in a couple of sittings. I’ve heard Nanny Connie speak via Instagram so when I read the book, I heard it in her voice. I quote her so much that my husband is starting to get annoyed. But really he’s listened to me when I read sections of her book and took her advice to heart, i.e. burping techniques, breastfeeding, and pacifier usage (I’m pro and he’s against). All in all it’s a wonderful book and I learned a lot.
I found this book to be both helpful and entertaining. Some baby books have too much information and it's an info overload where I'll never remember everything. I appreciated the approach and structure she used for the book. I could have done without the section on hiring a night nurse (one of the reasons I bought the book is because we couldn't afford one) and probably could have done without so many celebrity commentaries, but overall I appreciated her insight and am glad she shared it in this book!
Take this book's advice with a grain of salt. there are a lot of things she says in here that your OB would tell you do not do and there are a lot of things in here that your OB will say def do. its just another opinion in the long line of opinions on how to raise your baby. the celebrity piece gets annoying and redundant. but you can skip past it. prob would not buy this for a friend.
I absolutely loved this book. As a first time mom, there were so many useful tips I would have never known without this read. I feel like I adjusted better to parenthood because of this book and had a happier baby too! My husband is thankful for her useful tips too! They may be seasoned advice and tips, but for this momma - it was worth every penny buying this book! As for a previous reviewer stated that you shouldn’t pull back the fore skin to clean anymore - my doctor says you should! So her advice may be sound for the kids and doctors she has dealt with!
As a RN labor and delivery/newborn nursery nurse and mother I HIGHLY encourage all new mamas and seasoned to read this book.
This book is a great resource for parents. It would make a great shower gift. Nanny Connie has a great sense of humor which makes for a fun and enjoyable read. Her compassion for not only babies, but mom's too is evident on every page and makes you feel as though she really is talking to you.
